Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would love to face former club Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, but hopes the two clubs are still kept apart in Friday's quarter-final draw.

The Reds secured their place as England's sole representative in the last eight after holding Manchester United 1-1 at Old Trafford, as Tottenham failed to produce a comeback against Dortmund.

Klopp's men were already in command of the last-16 tie following a 2-0 win in the first leg on Merseyside.

United gave their home fans hope of an unlikely recovery through a penalty from Anthony Martial on 32 minutes, only for Philippe Coutinho to net a superb equaliser just before half-time following a mazy run, which proved enough to see the Reds through.

Klopp left Dortmund in July 2015, having taken the Bundesliga side to the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley.

He said: "I have contacts with my Dortmund friends, they all would like to play against us - but in Basle (in the final).

"But you saw all the results, there are only good teams left in the race. It's cool. Last eight? Perfect."

Spurs were left to focus on their Barclays Premier League title ambitions after going down 2-1 to Dortmund at White Hart Lane.

The Germans were 3-0 up from the first leg, and any dreams of a fightback were extinguished once Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored on 24 minutes and then added another midway through the second half.

South Korea midfielder Son Heung-Min netted a consolation for the hosts, who went out 5-1 on aggregate, and will regroup for Sunday's league match against Bournemouth as they aim to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Leicester.

Europa League holders Sevilla will be the team everyone wants to avoid after they coasted into the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Basle at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

The Spanish side, who had left Switzerland with a goalless draw in the first leg, swept into a 35th-minute lead through a header by defender Adil Rami.

Kevin Gameiro tapped in a second two minutes before the break and quickly made Basle pay for more lax defending when scoring at third goal for the hosts just before half-time which ended the tie as a contest.

Braga are also in the pot for Friday's draw after the Portuguese side overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit to beat Fenerbahce 4-1, as the Turks finished with only eight men on the pitch.

Eduardo's stoppage-time goal earned Shakhtar Donetsk a 1-0 second-leg win to round off a comfortable progression past Anderlecht, 4-1 on aggregate.

In Thursday's early evening kick-offs, Sparta Prague produced a brilliant first-half performance to thrash Lazio 3-0 to book their place in the last eight and went through 4-1 winners on aggregate.

Elsewhere, Gary Neville's Valencia side were knocked out on away goals by fellow Primera Division side Athletic Bilbao, despite a 2-1 victory on the night.

Villarreal also reached the last eight after a goalless draw at Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-0 win on aggregate.
