Labour's casual elections to be held on June 12

Robert Abela is among the MPs who have given up one of their parliamentary seats.

The casual elections for Labour Party candidates will be held on Friday June 12, the Electoral Commission has announced.

The casual elections will be held in the second, third, seventh, eighth, ninth, eleventh and twelfth districts after eight Labour MPs gave up their seats.

Unlike the Nationalist Party, where the party statute states that MPs elected in two districts must vacate the seat where they received the lowest share of votes, Labour’s rules give the party a free hand to decide which seats should be vacated.

Prime Minister Robert Abela, elected from the second and fifth districts, will vacate the second district seat.

Other seats were vacated by Ian Borg, Michael Falzon, Miriam Dalli, Clyde Caruana, Clifton Grima, Jonathan Attard and Chris Fearne.

Candidates can present their nominations from Saturday till June 10.

The vote counting in the casual elections will begin at 9am on Friday June 12.
