Labour MEPs Louis Grech, John Attard Montalto and Glenn Bedingfield yesterday voted in favour of a clause in a European Parliament resolution urging European member states to accept Guantanamo inmates once the prison is closed.

The text of the clause, part of a resolution approved by the European Parliament yesterday:

“Calls upon the Member states, should the US administration request it, to cooperate in finding solutions, to be prepared to accept Guantanamo inmates in the EU, in order to contribute to reinforce international law, and to provide, as a priority, fair and humane treatment to all, and recalls that Member States have a duty of loyal cooperation to consult each other regarding possible effects on public security throughout the EU;

Nationalist MPs Simon Busuttil and David Casa voted against this clause but in favour of the resolution in its totality.

The resolution called on EU governments to help the new US administration close the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
