Labour Party to host Socialist International Council
Spanish PM to chair meetings of left-wing parties from 100 countries in Malta
The Labour Party is to host the Socialist International Council in Malta, grouping left-wing political parties from 100 countries.
The council will be held between Thursday and Sunday.
Socialist International bring together 130 social-democratic and Labour political parties from across the world.
The president of Socialist International, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will chair the Council.
Labour Party deputy leader Alex Agius Saliba told a press conference that the fact that Socialist International chose the Labour Party to host this council meeting showed confidence in the party and reflected the strong relationship the PL has with Socialist International.
It also meant that Socialist International was recognising the Labour Party's work in government on a national, European and global level.
PL international secretary John Grech said that the theme for the council meeting is Leading Together – a theme which, he said, reflected the need for the left-wing political parties to act together to address the global challenges of governance, peace and social justice.
Grech said that the event's key sessions will be on Saturday and Sunday when the council will be addressed by Sanchez and Prime Minister Robert Abela.
