Letter bomb victim Karin Grech recalled, 48 years after the tragedy

The 15-year-old was killed as she opened a parcel addressed to her father

The Labour Party paid tribute on Sunday to Karin Grech, the 15-year-old doctor's daughter killed in an explosion as she opened a parcel addressed to her father 48 years ago.

Prime Minister Robert Abela accompanied by the Labour Party's administration and numerous Labour MPs laid flowers on her memorial in San Ġwann. He said that the memory of Karin Grech was still relevant today, because many atrocities in nearby countries reminded all of the significance of peace.

He said Karin Grech’s parents paid the highest price because of their beliefs, losing their daughter in the prime of her life, because her father, Professor Edwin Grech, continued to take care of patients, during a doctors' strike.

Painful episodes of the past needed to be remembered for better appreciation of peace and national unity, Abela said.

PN leader Alex Borg recalled Karin Grech in a Facebook post, saying her death was a stark reminder that the innocent suffered when hatred and violence replaced dialogue and respect.
