Labour Party suspends councillor after incident with enforcement official

Party says the decision is a precautionary measure pending further investigation

The Labour Party has suspended a councillor following alleged involvement in an incident with an enforcement officer.

The party gave scant details in a statement on Tuesday but informed sources said the case involved Qormi councillor Daniel Ablett and a LESA officer. The case happened on Sunday in Valletta.

The Labour Party said it had decided, with immediate effect and as a precautionary measure, to suspend the councillor from representing the Labour Party in any structure, including in the Local Council.

"While stressing that the individual remains presumed innocent, the Labour Party believes that public trust in the work being done by its representatives should be safeguarded," it said.

The party said it was offering its "full support" to law enforcement officials and authorities and would continue to follow the case and take any further decisions necessary in the light of the developments and resulting facts.
