Labour pitches itself as the only credible choice

The Labour Party is pitching itself as the only credible option, with a track record in maintaining stability.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Labour MPs Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and Amanda Spiteri Grech argued that their party is the only credible choice that prioritises stability.

Zrinzo Azzopardi said the Labour Party in government has a track record of keeping its promises, partly because of a monitoring system that allows the party to track which electoral pledges have been fulfilled.

He referred to a press conference held in March, where Robert Abela said the government implemented 82 per cent of its manifesto.

Zrinzo Azzopardi - a minister who was also responsible for overseeing the implementation of Labour's 2022 manifesto - also said the Labour Party went beyond its electoral pledges, having earmarked plenty of land for new open spaces, including an agreement to turn Manoel Island into a national park.

He said the government managed to do this despite geopolitical trouble.

Amanda Spiteri Grech said the Labour government’s success in building a strong economy and country finances helped it shelter people from economic hardship beyond Malta’s shores.

She argued that the Nationalist Party could threaten this stability if elected into government.

Spiteri Grech also referred to recent comments by PN leader Alex Borg about energy subsidies being a short-term measure, saying the Nationalist Party in government would only lead to more confusion.

Spiteri Grech said the PN has a vague position on energy subsidies, which could throw the scheme into jeopardy and harm families.

The PN has said it intends to keep subsidies and on Tuesday its MP Adrian Delia claimed a PN government would lead to energy prices so low that subsidies would not be needed.

This was the second Labour Party press conference on Wednesday as the country gears up for a general election on May 30.
