A Labour government would be ready to close down the new recycling plant at Marsascala if it created bad odours, Labour leader Alfred Sant said.

Speaking at a meeting with the committee lobbying against the proposed plant, he reiterated Labour's stand that it was better to have waste recycling plants catering for specific regions rather than a national plant.

His party, he said, was against the enlargement of the present plant, which could be modernised without being enlarged.

If it were to remove the Marsascala plant, a Labour government would reach an agreement with regional authorities on a number of sites where recycling plants could be placed.

The chairman of the committee, Marsascala mayor Charlot Bonnici, noted that the Malta Planning and Environment Authority had accepted the outline development plan for the new plant in spite of serious objections from many people.

The committee would continue to fight this decision and had, in fact, filed an appeal, he said.
