The Maltese Community Council in New South Wales hoped that Maltese citizenship would be extended to fourth and fifth generation Maltese to protect their descendants and prevent preferment of other European citizens, the Labour Party said in a statement on Opposition Leader Alfred Sant's visit to Australia.
Dr Sant said the time had come to draft a proposal on how citizenship laws could be liberalised again to be of more help to those of Maltese origin.
A Labour government would guarantee the drafting of a new White Paper on the subject.
He also had meetings with financial and commercial sector representatives, accompanied by Labour MP Charles Mangion and the representative of the Labour Party in Canberra, Charles Muscat.
The trip to Sydney was aimed at identifying initiatives and investment that could be exploited through the policy of partnership with the EU and other countries such as Australia.
The MLP also made contact with the members of the Maltese community in New South Wales.
