Nationalist MEP David Casa, who sits on the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament, on Tuesday urged the European Council to introduce measures aimed at achieving a sustainable balance in the Mediterranean.

Mr Casa was addressing the plenary session of the European Parliament meeting in Brussels after he moved a motion for a resolution on the adoption of management measures for the Mediterranean fishery resources.

Outlining the importance of the resolution, Mr Casa expressed his concerns regarding the complexity of the fisheries sector, in particular that of the Mediterranean. He said that he had many reservations regarding the Council of Ministers' lack of action and its on-going passive approach. His concern was shared by many MEPs in the fisheries committee, he said.

He called for the adoption of rules better adapted to the Common Fisheries Policy. Such rules would make it easier to achieve the objectives currently being managed by measures introduced over a decade ago and which have been obsolete since their adoption.
