Total sales by large manufacturing enterprises in the third quarter this year amounted to Lm251.7 million, an increase of Lm20.4 million, or 8.8 per cent, over the same period of the previous year, the National Statistics Office said.

During that quarter, employment in the enterprises decreased by a net 890, to 21,389, when compared to the third quarter of last year.

Most of the drop was registered in the clothes (319 employees), the plastic and rubber products (248 employees) and the leather (173 employees) sub-sectors.

Investment in manufacturing declined by a net Lm1.9 million, to Lm9.2 million, compared to Lm11.1 million in the same quarter last year.
