Latin for Arabic?

I refer to Carmel Micallef's letter (Maltese Alphabet For Arabic, December 20), in which he suggested that "sooner or later Arabic will have to evolve into the Latin script due to progress in information technology and cellular telephony".

I would like to ask which of the Maltese letters would best fit the Arabic ta (soft /t/), tha and ta (strong, guttural /h/), the ha, kha and ha (soft/h/) and the dal, dhal and dod, among others.

Secondly, why is it that the Japanese, whose phonology is by far more similar to the Maltese and Latin ones than Arabic, never gave the Latin alphabet a second thought as proved by the persisting existence of Katakana? For, if Arabs should find sending an sms difficult, then the Japanese, with two "alphabets" of 46 characters each and kanji with innumerable ones, should be very technologically challenged!

My only certainty is that though my Japanese and Arab friends are not a representative sample of their respective nations, they do not text their co-nationals in an even remotely predominantly Latin alphabet.
