From the very start of student representation efforts in Malta, law students have always played a pivotal role. It was in fact at the beginning of the 20th century, on the initiative of Arturo Mercieca, then a law student, that the CPU (now KSU) was set up as the first student union on the island.
As the number of students grew, the need was felt for student representation efforts to be localised in the various faculties. Once again taking the first step, a group of law students in 1943, when Malta was still ravaged by war, set up the Ghaqda Studenti tal-Ligi (University Law Students' Society) (GHSL). This group was then led by a young student, Joseph Ganado, who was later to become Professor of Civil Law at the University of Malta. Professor Ganado is now honorary president of the Ghaqda Studenti tal-Ligi.
The Law Students Society organises several seminars and conferences addressed by both local speakers as well as top foreign speakers. Particular emphasis is made on the organisation of Moot Courts, which have featured in the society's calendar of events since its foundation. The Ghaqda Studenti tal-Ligi can also boast of its own Thesis Library, containing a collection of theses presented at the Faculty of Law by law students throughout the years, as well as a number of books and foreign journals donated by the society's benefactors.
The society also organises social events, ranging from pub crawling and parties to the annual graduation ball and St Ives celebrations.
On www.ghsl.org , one finds hyperlinks directing to both the LL.B. and the LL.D. course programmes as issued by the Faculty of Law itself. The new site now also boasts of an online Noticeboard section where one can easily download lecture timetables and important faculty notices.
Another key innovation is a powerful internal search engine that has now been incorporated in this website to enable anyone to navigate the site with greater ease. The Publications category gives access to information about Id-Dritt and on the GHSL Thesis Library. Further information is accessed on the Website or by e-mailing Antoine Demicoli. The European Law Students Association (ELSA) together with members of ELSA Lawyer Society (ELS) is organising in Malta the International Council Meeting commencing today of all international ELSA boards.
