Lawyer's arraignment for threatening a career criminal postponed

Mifsud, who was due to be charged on Tuesday, will appear in court in September

Lawyer Mario Mifsud is set to be charged with threatening and insulting career criminal Paschalino Cefai during a Gozo court sitting earlier this month.

Mifsud was set to appear in court on Tuesday, however the case was postponed till September 2.

Cefai has already been charged over the same incident for allegedly insulting Mifsud, Mifsud’s mother as well as his brother, magistrate Joe Mifsud.

He denies the charges.

The incident took place during a court sitting concerning a collision in which Cefai was the accused and Mifsud appeared as the lawyer for the victim.

Cefai and Mifsud exchanged insults during that court hearing, leading to police moving to file criminal charges against both men.

When Cefai was arraigned, the prosecution told the court that Cefai claimed Mifsud's brother, a magistrate, had brought him a bottle of whisky in prison and drank it with him.

He allegedly also called Mario Mifsud a cuckold, and claimed the brothers’ mother, who is 86, “prostitutes herself in Gżira”.

Mifsud is reported to have responded with insults of his own.

The lawyer is no stranger to controversy, having previously been arraigned twice over threats. In both cases, the alleged victims withdrew their complaints.

He is also facing charges for having allegedly bitten his client's nose.
