Sir Michael Tippett`s life and work will be the topic of a lecture by Rosa Micallef Judge, the last of the series of talks organised by the British Culture Association this season.
Sir Michael, who died in 1998 aged 92, was one of Britain`s most distinguished and respected composers of the 20th century.
In 1941 his oratorio A child of our time, inspired by an incident of Nazi atrocity, ensured his fame, and his use of spirituals instead of the customary chorales was particularly noteworthy.
He wrote a number of operas to his own texts, such as The midsummer marriage (1955) and King Priam (1962).
The lecture, which will be illustrated, is being given in the Music Room, Centre for Creativity, St James Cavalier on May 21 at 6.30 p.m. All are invited.
