Russell Crowe is being charged for grabbing a telephone and throwing it at a hotel employee. He faces a maximum of seven years in jail if convicted (Weekender, August 27).

In Malta a person will be given a suspended jail sentence if found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm, fined a few liri or reprimanded if found guilty of causing slight injuries and reprimanded if found guilty of attacking and slightly injuring the police and resisting arrest. A person will also be awarded a suspended jail sentence or a fine if he causes the death of a third party by means of reckless and dangerous driving.

Lenient sentencing is the norm in our justice system.
