Politics is dirty, wrote Fr René Camilleri (April 1). This is enough reason for the reverend father and other clerics to keep out of politics.

Both the distant and recent past, have taught us that whenever members of the clergy indulge in politics a lot of harm is caused both to the local church and to the well being of the island in general.

Those clerics who take partisan part in politics lose esteem as they are then treated like politicians. I am sure that politics is not the vocation of the priesthood. We must thank heaven that this time partisan priests are on the Labour Party side with the Nationalist Party not sensitive to the whole issue.

Maria Gauci (April 15) either has a lapse of memory or was too young to remember the past.
