The Labour Party's main spokesman on home affairs yesterday expressed his satisfaction that the government had accepted the call by the opposition for the organisation of a national conference on immigration.

Gavin Gulia said that his satisfaction was even greater seeing that the proposal by the MLP had initially been discredited and ridiculed by the government. In a statement issued by the MLP, Dr Gulia argued that the conference should neither be dominated by politicians nor be overshadowed by a document that will be published prior to the conference, which seems likely to be the case. He suggested that it should be the experts and not the politicians who should lead and animate the debate.

Dr Gulia said he expected to be consulted on how the conference will be organised and structured.
