Forty-one teachers who took part in a Let Me Learn training programme were recently presented with their certificates.

Let Me Learn is an educational process that was born in America in 1994. Malta was one of the first countries which started to use its Learning Combination Inventory to implement learning strategies which fit the learning profile of each child.

A pilot training programme was carried out with a group of teachers in three schools in 1998, and since then an increasing number of teachers have learned how to implement the LML process in their classrooms.

A new group of 54 teachers from 26 schools will soon be starting training.

The teachers will be made aware of the four learning patterns, learn how to administer the inventory and adopt the correct attitude towards differentiated teaching. Teachers also acquire the skill to create appropriate learning materials and to empower students to take control of their own learning.

The LML team, coordinated by Colin Callja, works in conjunction with the Education Division and the University of Malta. Besides providing training it maintains a resourceful website, www.letmelearnmalta.com, and a newsletter distributed to schools around Malta.

It has also introduced the 'metacognitive friends', five captivating soft toys which are becoming very popular among primary school students.

The resources LML offers to teachers include a reflective journal called "Clicks" and a lending library comprising a vast range of books and multimedia material.

The schools involved in this scholastic year's programme are the following: Carmel Sammut Primary A, Mosta; FX Attard Boys' Secondary, Marsa; St. Francis of Assisi, Sta. Venera; George Schinas Primary C, Luqa; Gorg Zammit Primary A, Qormi SG; Patri Manwel Gatt Primary B, Sta Venera; Guzeppa Deguara Primary C, Marsaxlokk and Francis Ebejer Primary B, Zurrieq.

The certificates were awarded during a ceremony held at the National Curriculum Centre in Hamrun, in the presence of the education minister, the opposition spokesman on education, the dean of the Faculty of Education, the director general of education and the director of curriculum management.
