Stop this calamity

Christopher John Linskill of Ħamrun writes:

Recent reports in Times of Malta have highlighted new and terrible news of the destruction of the Gaza Strip as well as the thousands of human deaths accurately reported by the United Nations and many others.

The massive and prolonged damage and destruction of buildings (78% of the total) and of resources has now expanded and can be described as “ecocide” because we now see the natural rural areas very badly affected and likely to suffer from heavy pollution for at least some years to come.

The destruction of every aspect of the Gaza Palestine, destroying it for any human use, is a Hitlerian fantasy with no basis except racial superiority by the Israelis.

We must do all we can to bring justice to this appalling situation inflicted by Israel with US support. The areas around Israel are heavily populated and without resources, and so, refugee camps experience much suffering and starvation.

Aid must get through to the countries involved, such as Lebanon, and international justice must punish genocidal and ecocidal tyrants such as Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Israeli style of operation against Hamas is like that of an immoral and incompetent police force that kills 100 innocent civilians while looking to arrest one criminal.

Pot and kettle

Alan Cooke of Gżira writes:

Peter Dingli (‘The illusion of debate’, May 20) insists that religion should have no part in political debate.

He writes from the United States, where senior members of the government seem to have no hesitation in using the influence of religion to justify the murder of Iranian and Palestinian civilians, including children.

Like everywhere else, Malta has its faults. But, as an explicitly Christian state, it has never since Independence waged war or joined in war against anyone. That’s more than can be said of the US.

All this must be stopped.
