Anything goes

George Saliba of Qawra writes:

I refer to the report ‘Uninsured and plagued by incidents: inside the Lourdes fireworks factory’ (June 14), which deals with the huge explosion of June 1. It was reported elsewhere that many people could have died. I was really disgusted that the government or its agencies have allowed such a factory to  operate without a valid insurance policy.

The explosions were seen from neighbouring towns and villages. File photo: Times of MaltaThe explosions were seen from neighbouring towns and villages. File photo: Times of Malta

Good luck to those seeking compensation. In truth, I am not surprised because, in my country, anything goes.

Mission work in Brazil

Mgr Vincent Costa, Bishop Emeritus of Jundiaí, Brazil, writes:

On behalf of the Diocese of Jundiaí in Brazil, I would like to thank the Mission Fund for the donation towards our work here.

This donation will be used by the Diocesan Caritas and for the formation of our seminarians.

Caritas is responsible for the social aspect of the diocese, mainly by financing projects with the aim of helping poor families to have a better quality of life.

This contribution will also be used for the education of our seminarians in a country where the number of priests is very low, thus, the need for more investment in this area. At present our diocese has four seminarians in the propedeutical level, 19 in the philosophy course, 10 in the theology course and one in the pastoral year, who will shortly be ordained deacon, that is 34 in all.

Finally, I urge all benefactors to continue praying for me and for all the other Maltese missionaries, while also continuing to give their support through donations to the Mission Fund. One can do so by sending used stamps or financial donations online or by direct transfer to one of the following accounts:
