Anyone wanting to drive a boat with an engine of more than 30 horsepower will need a licence to do so come January 2011.

The new licence, announced by Transport Malta yesterday, will replace the current one, which was only required for boats with an engine bigger than 100 horsepower.

To be issued with a licence, one has to attend a basic seamanship course and pass Transport Malta's examination at the end of it.

The new rules also bring into force reductions in both the initial and annual registration fees the government announced in the Budget last November. About 16,000 people will benefit.
