Lidl 'back in action' as shelves are restocked after weekend storm halted supply
German retailer says deliveries are now 'running as usual'
Lidl’s supermarket shelves were fully restocked on Tuesday after the weekend’s adverse weather delayed deliveries.
The German international discount supermarket chain posted photos of fully replenished shelves piled high with fresh fruit, vegetables and meat saying they were “back in action”.
On Sunday and Monday consumers were faced with empty shelves at Lidl and Eurospin with no fresh fruit, vegetables, beef, pork and poultry products all missing.
Many dairy products were also missing at Eurospin.
In a social media post, Lidl Malta said that “following the temporary delivery delays caused by last weekend’s adverse weather, we’re happy to confirm that all shelves are now fully stocked and deliveries are running as usual.”
Għaqda Bdiewa Attivi, an NGO representing farmers highlighted the vulnerability of Malta’s supply chain pointing out “a bit of bad weather for a day or two and these are the consequences”.
The NGO described the situation as the "result of a country that is over-dependant on imported food products."
