Lidl worker caught with car full of stolen supermarket goods

23-year-old gets probation order after immediately admitting to theft

A 23-year-old supermarket worker was caught with a car full of items stolen from a Lidl store in Żejtun, a court heard.

The man pleaded guilty to theft when arraigned in court on Friday afternoon.

Lidl management contacted police on Thursday to inform them that they had found a car full of boxes possibly containing items stolen from their Żejtun supermarket.

Officers established that the car belonged to Jake Carabott from Kirkop, who worked at that supermarket.

Carabott immediately owned up to stealing the items.

Police also discovered that the man had already sold a stolen TV. It was returned together with the other items. All unopened objects were returned to Lidl and the man paid the supermarket for the TV set.

In court, Carabott pleaded guilty to aggravated theft charges and handling of stolen goods.

The court handed him a three-year probation order.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit presided.AG lawyer Martina Calleja prosecuted, assisted by police inspectors James Mallia and Wayne Bonello. Lawyer Maroushka Debono assisted the accused.
