Creatives, NGOs and businesses invited to apply
Victoria has opened submissions for proposals for its cultural programme, to be included in the city’s official ‘bid book’ ahead of its final assessment for the Capital of Culture 2031 title in September.
In a statement, organisers of the foundation behind the city’s bid, 'Victoria2031Għawdex’, called on artists and other creative practitioners, informal collectives, NGOs and businesses to propose original artistic and cultural project proposals for inclusion in the city’s ‘bid book’.
The book will determine whether Victoria is crowned a European Capital of Culture in 2031, the statement explained.
The final selection phase is set to take place in September, following Victoria’s shortlisting in November. It is expected to be awarded the title, alongside an as yet unnamed Spanish city.
The European Capital of Culture award lasts a year and sees EU and government funds channelled to support events throughout a city’s term, while supporting economic and social development.
Victoria’s vision for the competition is a “living framework guiding the programme and inviting people to experiment and respond to local and European challenges through arts and culture”, the statement read.
“It sees Victoria as an interconnected 'holobiont' [a collection of organisms] shaped by care and interdependence, and imagines an ‘Island of Islands' woven from people, places, memories and more-than-human voices — alongside islands of ideas that transcend boundaries”.
