The British and Irish Lions have made wholesale changes for Saturday's second test with New Zealand in the wake of their heavy defeat in the series opener.

Lions coach Clive Woodward introduced seven new players to his starting 15, including five in the forward pack, plus another on the bench.

Woodward was heavily criticised for his selections in the first test but, in need of a win to keep the three-test series alive, he has once again kept faith in the English players who won the 2003 World Cup, awarding them nine of the 22 places in the squad.

Six Nations champions Wales provided eight players to the squad while five Irishmen were chosen. There were none from Scotland.

Woodward also reshuffled his backline to accommodate the loss of his captain Brian O'Driscoll who dislocated his shoulder in Christchurch.

Jonny Wilkinson has been moved in to flyhalf after struggling at inside centre while the new skipper, Welshman Gareth Thomas, moved from the wing to outside centre.

Two of the new faces were Gavin Henson and Shane Williams, who were both controversially left out of the first test.

Lions team

Lewsey (England); Robinson (England), Thomas (captain, Wales), Henson (Wales), Williams (Wales); Wilkinson (England), Peel (Wales); Jones (Wales), Moody (England), Easterby (Ireland), O'Callaghan (Ireland), O'Connell (Ireland); White (England), Thompson (England), Jenkins (Wales).
