Liverpool are close to signing Atletico Madrid's Argentine striker Maxi Rodriguez for €1.5 million, a Spanish sports newspaper reported yesterday.

The player has already announced the news to his team-mates, said Marca, which did not indicate its sources.

It said the cash would help Atletico to buy striker Eduardo Salvio from Argentine club Lanus for eight million euros.

Atletico have been active in the mid-season transfer window after a poor start to the season that has left them in 11th place in the Primera Liga, 17 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Spanish media also reported that Atletico are set to sign Arsenal's 19-year-old Spanish midfielder Fran Merida.

They are also close to buying Portuguese midfielder Tiago Mendes from Juventus, another sports newspaper, AS, reported.
