The 2004 edition of the FISEC Games in Malta, the 56th in the series, is only a few weeks away. Preparations have now reached their crucial final stages before the annual international sports festival for secondary school students is held between July 18 and 24.
The Malta FISEC Council, organisers of the Games, were yesterday boosted by the news that an agreement has been reached with the Malta Sports Council to be among the main sponsors. The signing of the deal was held during a press conference at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
Brother Martin Borg, chairman of the Malta FISEC Council, expressed his delight that the Malta Sports Council have pledged their support.
More than 1,000 athletes and officials from Holland, Spain, Croatia, Jordan, France, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, Austria, UK, Portugal and, of course, Malta have confirmed their participation.
"The Malta Sports Council's decision to support this year's Games is a huge injection of confidence into our organisation. For several years we have tried to instil the fundamental values of friendship and unity in our young athletes through the FISEC Games," Bro Borg said.
"The organisation requires a lot of commitment and planning. Besides, a significant financial package is needed. Certainly this sponsorship will give us the resources to help us stage yet another memorable edition of the FISEC Games."
Financial details of the sponsorship were revealed by Malta Sports Council president Franco Azzo-pardi. He said the total amount forked out by his organisation is Lm15,000, the first Lm10,000 of which will be made available immediately and the rest to be passed over to the Malta FISEC Council at the end of competition.
"With the impressive number of athletes and officials travelling to Malta, the FISEC Games represent an excellent opportunity for our country to promote itself as an ideal sporting venue," Azzopardi said.
"Sports Tourism is one area the Malta Sports Council is seeking to improve.
"We are committed to help all local associations who have the ambition of hosting similar international sports festivals."
