Workers from the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry are working on the damage caused by November's bad weather at Wied Iz-Zurrieq, the Minister for Resources and Infrastructure, Ninu Zammit, said yesterday.
The ministry has also started to build the promenade of Wied Babu that leads to Wied Iz-Zurrieq, together with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. The south of Malta was more than ever before the focus of several government projects, he said.
Mr Zammit was touring works on a garden in Zurrieq, being built in honour of the large number of builders that came from the villages in this area throughout the years. The job, being carried out by the Works Division, started in October and is expected to be terminated in May.
The garden, estimated to cost Lm85,000, is to include nine illuminated arches of different styles and shapes, a corbelled hut, 675 square metres of paving, benches and garden furniture, an already existent well and a new reservoir that can take about 180 cubic metres of water.
Much of the water from the nearby streets can be collected to irrigate the trees that are going to be planted and an irrigation system is also being installed, Mr Zammit said. A small playing field will be built according to EU standards to ensure safety for children.
Later on in the year, works on a number of inhabited roads in Zurrieq will begin in collaboration with the Urban Development and Roads Ministry and works on the widening of Triq Sta Marija in Bubaqra are scheduled to start in the coming weeks.
