Casual elections to fill vacant seats in six local councils

Nominations open for casual elections in Birkirkara, Marsascala, Siġġiewi, Għargħur, Gżira and Mosta

The Electoral Commission will receive nominations this week for casual elections to fill vacant seats on six local councils after councillors were elected to parliament in the May general election.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Commission said the vacancies were created after councillors in Birkirkara, Marsascala, Siġġiewi, Għargħur, Gżira and Mosta were elected.

Nominations will be accepted at the Commission office from Wednesday, June 24, to Friday, June 26. Candidates may also apply online.

Gżira has one vacant seat after former mayor Conrad Borg Manché was elected as a Nationalist Party MP.

Għargħur mayor Mariah Meli was elected to parliament on the Labour Party ticket via casual elections, while Birkirkara councillor Yana Debono Grech was elected as a Labour MP through the gender-corrective mechanism.

John Baptist Camilleri, who served as minority leader on the Marsascala local council, was elected to parliament in the third district, filling the seat vacated by Stephen Spiteri.

Siġġiewi mayor Julian Borg won the Nationalist Party’s second seat in the sixth district, securing more than 2,200 first-count votes.

Anthony Agius Decelis was elected in the 11th district and will vacate his seat on the Mosta local council.

Prospective candidates must present their identity card. Those who are ill or abroad may have a representative submit the nomination form on their behalf.

The representative must present a power of attorney drawn up specifically for this purpose and authenticated by a notary. Each nomination must be accompanied by a €90 deposit.
