The Qrendi council is writing to Unesco to protest the government's decision to set up interim landfills in the limits of Qrendi in the vicinity of the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra temples.

Qrendi deputy mayor Claudette Baldacchino said the council was taking a series of measures following the government's decision announced on Wednesday.

The council unanimously agreed to write to Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit to inform him it was against any type of landfill in the vicinity of the Mnajdra temples and other historic sites at ix-Xaghra tal-Maghlaq and il-Qasam il-Kbir, in the limits of Qrendi.

The council also agreed it should seek the support of the 13 councils in the area, of the Association of Local Councils and other organisations so that together they would make their voice heard against any type of landfill in the area.
