Local council objects to trade fair plans
'Company ignored inconvenience to residents'
The Naxxar local council has objected to plans for fairs to be held again at the former fair grounds in the locality.
After a two-year lull, this week a company was formed by members of the Trade Fair Exhibitors' Association proposing to use the site again.
The company's president, Paul Abela said on Monday the grounds would be used for various events, including a summer fair, which this year would be held between June 24 and July 4, putting it in direct competition with a similar commercial event held at Ta' Qali.
The Naxxar grounds are planned to be up and running by the end of next month after refurbishment work is completed. They were last used as an election counting hall in June 2009. The local council has insisted it was neither informed nor consulted about the plans and said the new company had not taken into account the impact on Naxxar residents.
The fair had been held in Naxxar for decades, however, there had been long-standing complaints by residents about the inconvenience it caused through traffic congestion, parking problems and pollution.
