It has just been announced that Bishop Mario Grech has appointed Mgr Jimmy Xerri as the new archpriest of Nadur. Mgr Xerri is the successor of Mgr Saviour Muscat who had been archpriest of Nadur for 27 years. I would like to take this opportunity to warmly thank Archpriest Muscat for the invaluable service he offered to the Nadur community.
Three decades are not a joke. A community undergoes enormous transformations in a decade, let alone three.
Mgr Muscat did not hesitate to take important decisions when necessary and he was always close to those mostly in need, even by visiting them regularly, especially the sick and the elderly, even if this involved going to the hospitals of mainland Malta.
I am sure Mgr Xerri will be a worthy successor of Mgr Muscat. We are lucky to be endowed with the spiritual richness of a missionary coming from so many years of experience in Brazil.
I myself am a former catechism student of Mgr Xerri back in those days when he was still a seminarian.
The Nadur community should appreciate the fact that Mgr Xerri left behind him thousands of other Catholics who most probably respect the figure of the priest much more than we do.
If we are willing to open our hearts, then we can only be enriched with the spiritual experience of the new archpriest. This only depends on our individual willingness to do so.
May I thank Bishop Grech for bestowing the Nadur community with Mgr Xerri following the able tenure of Mgr Muscat.
