Long-serving Ħamrun councillor resigns

No nominations yet for casual election to replace Carmen Borg

No nominations were submitted on the first day of the casual election process triggered by the resignation of Labour councillor Carmen Borg from the Ħamrun Local Council.

Borg stepped down after more than two decades on the council.

Just before the 2024 local council elections, Borg had initially said she would not contest the election “to focus on other priorities”, but changed her mind two weeks later following appeals from several Ħamrun residents to continue serving on the council.

Writing on social media after receiving the Mara award on Women's Day last year, Borg had said that despite hailing from the Labour Party, she had “worked with a social heart and determination for everyone and political colours never stopped me from serving those who needed it.”

The Ħamrun council is formed of six Labour councillors, including mayor Christian Sammut, and three Nationalist ones.
