At the top of Dingli Street in Sliema, in a place known as It-Tliet Sigriet just under the big tree, we had this old red phone booth which had stood there for long years. It was not just a phone booth but also a tourist attraction. Together with this big tree and the bench next to it, it caught the eye and camera of many a tourist. It also gave Sliema part of its character.
Unfortunately the phone booth was hit by a car and ruined beyond repair. Within a few days it was replaced - but what a replacement. We now have a wide, green, squarish phone booth of no aesthetic value at all. Is it possible that whoever is in charge of these things couldn't come up with something better? Is it possible that we couldn't replace this booth with one similar to it? Is it possible that with so many capable designers we could not come up with something better? These little things make a difference not just to us residents but also to our tourists.
The new bus stops have embellished and improved our country's looks. Isn't it time we had a good look at all the dull phone booths and brought in a touch of professional, local design to these boxes spread throughout our villages?
