Opposition leader Joseph Muscat this morning congratulated Louis Galea on his nomination to serve on the European Court of Auditors.
He said, however, that the Prime Minister was managing to get rid of the best elements within his party, including John Dalli and now Louis Galea.
He wondered, Dr Muscat said, whether Dr Gonzi's decisions were motivated by the national interest or his efforts to have better control over the government and Parliament.
Clearly, the government was not stable. Last week, had a vote been taken at the end of the debate on the power station extension, the government would have been defeated, in the same way as it would have been on the St John's Co-Cathedral Project and the issue over legal aid to persons under arest.
"What Dr Gonzi is doing has to be seen in this context. We have a government which is unstable, and a Prime Minister who is working to reduce instability," Dr Muscat said.
