Families facing financial difficulties, persons with disabilities and NGOs are to be given the opportunity to buy reconditioned computers at a nominal price under a new scheme launched by the government over the weekend.
Some 10,000, still-usable, Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 computers in government service will be reconditioned and offered to persons and voluntary organisations who do not have the means of buying a new one. The Pentium 3s will sell at €130 (Lm55.77) and Pentium 4s at €180 (Lm77.22).
Persons who cannot afford to fork out a lump sum can take out an interest-free loan which will be paid back through monthly instalments of €5. Speaking at the launch, IT Minister Austin Gatt and Social Policy Minister Dolores Cristina said the scheme was in line with the government's SmartStart initiative to provide IT opportunities to all.
Dr Gatt said the scheme was made possible by the government's new policy of leasing computers.
Registration can be made at any Maltapost branch as from Wednesday. Disabled persons have to registered with the National Commission for Persons with Disability.
