LPG carrier toppled over in Mellieħa, triggering hazardous material operation

People urged to avoid the area near Marfa

A Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier toppled over in Mellieħa on Thursday morning, triggering a “delicate and prolonged” clean-up operation.

Crews from the Civil Protection Department, as well as Mater Dei emergency department, were on the scene to assist with the clean-up.

The operation involves the safe transfer of LPG from the toppled lorry to another tanker brought to the scene.

Once engineers confirm that the vehicle is completely empty, the lorry will then be lifted using a crane.

The CPD said the operation is a multi-team effort, involving 15 firefighters, as well as members of the police and Transport Malta.

Members of the public are urged to avoid the area and follow instructions given by the authorities.

Mater Dei Hospital said its emergency department was responding to the "prolonged incident" and expects the "delicate operation" to take "several hours to conclude".
