Luizao awarded goal from 2000

Brazilian striker Luizao became the sixth highest scorer in Libertadores Cup history this week when he was awarded a goal from a game played in 2000.

Luizao's spokesman said the South American Football Confederation (CSF) had made the alteration after the player wrote to them and sent them a video of the game between Corinthians, for whom he was playing at the time, and Paraguayan club Olimpia.

The goal had originally been awarded to full-back Kleber after he provided the cross during the 2-2 draw. The goal took Luizao's tally in the 2000 competition to 15 goals and his overall in the Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League, to 29.

He shares the total with Anthony de Avila of Colombia and Juan Carlos Sarnari of Argentina.

The record scorer in Libertadores Cup history is Ecuador's Alberto Spencer, who scored 54 goals, nearly all of them for Uruguay's Penarol.

o The Brazilian championship claimed its sixth coaching victim in less than a week when Estevam Soares resigned at middle-of-the-table Sao Caetano on Thursday. Sao Caetano are seventh with 21 points. Soares had been in charge of the small club from the industrial outskirts of Sao Paulo since March. The 22-team league, which began in late April, has already claimed 15 coaching victims in 13 rounds of matches and threatens to top last year's final total of 42.

o The US struck twice in the dying minutes to edge Honduras 2-1 in a CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final on Thursday, snatching an unlikely victory in a match that the visitors had dominated. In tomorrow's final of the biennial competition for North and Central America and the Caribbean countries, the US will face Panama, who upset Colombia 3-2 in the second match of a double-header at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.
