Luxol look to strengthen set-up

New signings for national league teams

Luxol Basketball Club, under the stewardship of Alfred Pace, has recently effected some changes within the administrative sector.

Joseph Falzon has been appointed General Manager while long-time coach John Tabone will now also assume the role of Technical Director of the club, the oldest and one of the most successful basketball organisations on the islands.

Falzon and Tabone, co-founder members of Luxol in 1968, will help to revamp the basketball sector this coming season.

Falzon's top priority will be the refurbishment of facilities, particularly the gym at St Andrews.

Tabone will concentrate his efforts on carrying out the technical programme and the smooth transfer from mini-basket to competitive play.

In this aspect, Tabone will be assisting Louis Micallef, former general secretary of the MBA, who will retain his role as co-ordinator of the nursery and youth sectors.

In a club statement Tabone said: "Our main aspiration is not to develop champions but to ensure that the children grow up and progress in a loyal and serene atmosphere with an absolute res-pect to the rules of the game.

"Throughout the years we have introduced a significant amount of players from the nursery.

"We believe that the basketball programme at Luxol is exceptionally easy to follow. Our coaches have a sense of duty to monitor the players' development and, to some extent, look periodically into their progress off court."

Transfer market

Luxol Bupa are looking to strengthen the squad to regain the Kinnie League crown and have already acquired the services of young national team player Chris Sammut.

The women's team, again with the Vodafone sponsorship, will have international player Caroline Fenech back in their ranks after a spell on loan with Hibernians.

They have also registered another Malta player, Rachel Camilleri, from champions Rabat Depiro.

Registrations for the nursery, for boys and girls, is now open. Club officials will be in attendance at Luxol on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6 and 8 p.m.
