A consortium from Dubai that runs health resorts and luxury spas has submitted a proposal for the restoration and operation of the lower part of Fort St Elmo.
Sohum Wellness describes itself on its website as one of the largest spa and wellness chains in the world. It offers therapies for “body, mind and soul”, focusing on rejuvenation and healing, and says it has won several awards in its field.

The request for proposals was issued by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation within the Infrastructure Ministry in October.
The lower part of the fort has played a major part in Malta’s history and more recently provided the backdrop to the film The Midnight Express. It was also used by carnival enthusiasts for many years.
Last year, the Grand Harbour Corporation finalised an extensive project which included the rehabilitation and regeneration of the upper part of the fort, at a cost of €15 million, partly financed by the EU. This part of the fort is now being operated by Heritage Malta.
In the coming weeks, the corporation will be evaluating Sohum Wellness’s proposal in detail.
