Lyr-X Radio Awards Night at San Anton School

FOR the second time San Anton School organised the Lyr-X Radio Awards night on May 23.

The Lyr-X Radio Awards night was thought up to recognise the effort that students put into the organisation, running and production of programmes transmitted on the school radio. Inaugurated in December 2001, the radio goes 'on air' during break time and transmits only within the school precincts.

From the start the venture was a success. Students welcomed the idea with great enthusiasm. In no time at all the speakers around the school were belting out the latest in music in a style reminiscent of well known DJs. In time proper radio programmes were designed by groups of students, programmes with names like San Antunes, Round the Clock Music and Rock n Rap, just to mention a few.

The venue for this year's awards night was Studio 7 in Birkirkara, with two students, Ian and Sarah, acting as comperes. As the evening unfolded, the Grade 10 and Grade 11 students gave a commendable performance with their dancing and singing.

The versatile and highly promising local bands Scar and Chain gave an acoustic performance worthy of their talent, after which they were cordially invited to hand out an award, assisted by well known DJ Gianni.

Awards were given out for the following categories: Best Big Break Show, Most Original Programme Name, Best Morning Show, Most Promising DJs, and Best DJs.

The evening was a huge success. Yet what is more important than the fleeting moment of fun and enjoyment is that students are being given the opportunity to develop their potential as fluent speakers in a world which has come to place much emphasis on the ability to communicate well and effectively ... and who knows ... it might also have offered some students the opportunity to form part of the next generation's team of highly acclaimed DJs!
