Mr. E. Gatt is correct in stating (October 15) that the use of mobile phones in petrol stations is dangerous. Vodafone is keenly aware of this.

In the comment by Vodafone's managing director, Mr Joseph C. Grioli, to which Mr Gatt refers, the use of mobile phones to buy petrol was included.

This was, however, an example as part of a long list of possible applications of m-commerce, which might, depending on technological developments, become available in the future.

These applications include the potential to pay for goods and services such as travel and transit, fast food, restaurant/groceries and vending machines.

It is part of Vodafone's standard policy that prior to the launch of any service it always carries out the necessary research and testing not only to ensure the functionality but also the safety of the service for the benefit of all customers.
