EU law requires member countries to have clear plans for waste management. EU law also requires them to organise and manage rubbish dumps (landfills) in ways that would not pose risks to public health. It is evident that both our major landfills, Maghtab in Malta and Qortin in Gozo are not up to EU standards on landfills.

Malta's Waste Management Plan already envisages the closing down of both these landfills and their replacement with new landfills that are run according to EU standards.
