No waste will be deposited at Maghtab as from the end of next April, by which time an engineered landfill should be in operation, Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said yesterday. The site of the new landfill should be identified soon, the minister said in reply to parliamentary questions by Labour MP Joe Mizzi yesterday.

Mr Zammit said the fact that the EU accession date had been moved from January 1, 2003 to May 1, 2003 meant that Malta had slightly more time to close down Maghtab.

This did not mean that Malta was taking it easy. It had already started depositing some inert waste in unused quarries rather than Maghtab and by July 1 all such waste would be deposited in quarries.

Once Maghtab was closed down work would be taken in hand for its rehabilitation.
