Major banks end week up

Bank of Valletta shares opened the week at Lm3.349 on Monday and closed the week at Lm3.40 yesterday. A total of 19,578 shares changed hands over the week, spread over 33 deals. Following yesterday's session 610 shares at Lm3.35 and 306 shares at Lm3.42 were the outstanding bids and offers respectively.

In a company announcement issued on Wednesday, the board of directors of Bank of Valletta plc stated that they will be meeting on April 30 to approve the group's and the bank's interim financial statements for the half-year ended March 31, 2004 and to consider the declaration of an interim dividend.

HSBC closed the week's trading at Lm6.85, 40c more than last week's closing price of Lm6.45. A total of 27,275 shares changed hands over 32 deals. After yesterday's session, 200 shares at Lm6.65 and 150 shares at Lm6.85 were the best unsatisfied bids and offers respectively.

Meanwhile, Maltacom shares opened the week at Lm1.589 on Monday and closed the week at Lm1.50 yesterday. A total of 36,350 shares changed hands over the week, spread over 38 deals. Following yesterday's session, best bids of 5,000 shares at Lm1.40 and best offers of 1,350 shares at Lm1.50 remained outstanding.

In a company announcement issued on Monday, the board of directors of Middlesea Insurance plc stated that they will be meeting on April 29 to approve the publication of the company's financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2003 as well as the recommendation of a dividend.

The other equities which traded during the week appear below, followed by the range in which trading took place; 148 Lombard Bank plc shares at Lm4.05; 10,514 International Hotels Investments shares at €0.79; 28,205 Plaza Centres plc ordinary shares between Lm0.738 and Lm0.70; 1,315 First International Merchant Bank shares at USD1.10; 16,059 Malta International Airport shares between Lm0.85 and Lm0.82; 12,440 Global Financial Services shares between Lm1 and Lm0.90; and 20,000 Datatrak shares at Lm0.23.

Total Malta Government stock turnover amounted to a nominal value of Lm433,800 being traded in 48 deals over 21 different stocks. Trading over the week in corporate bonds was made up of a total value of Lm341,983.

The Malta Stock Exchange share index increased by 23.926 points or 0.91 per cent over the week and now stands at 2,658.950.
