Firefighters said on Thursday they were tackling a major fire at the Bacton gas terminal in eastern England, but that the blaze appeared to be confined to the terminal itself.
The Bacton terminal is one of the major terminals bringing North Sea gas ashore and is connected to the Interconnector pipeline. It is one of the largest gas terminal complexes in Britain.
Interconnector said the pipeline was not affected by the fire.
"It's not affecting us. It's the Shell terminal," a spokesman said.
"We have a very large scale incident ongoing at the moment at the Bacton Gas Shell UK Ltd site ... on the Norfolk coast," a spokeswoman for Norfolk fire brigade said.
She said there were 10 fire engines tackling the blaze which broke out shortly before 1800 GMT.
She said the fire was in the water treatment plant and that there was no immediate evidence of any chemicals being involved.
There was no information on any injuries or on the possible cause of the fire.
Bacton is one of the largest gas terminal complexes in the Britain.
Gas lands onshore at the three producer terminals from the Southern North Sea and from the Shearwater Elgin Area Line (SEAL) and is then distributed to customers via the National Grid terminal, or to Belgium via the Interconnector system.
When in reverse flow mode, the Interconnector Bacton Terminal is used to import gas into Britain.
