Malta A beat England 8-4 to clinch title

Debono upset in juniors final

The European Pool Championships came to a close yesterday when the finals in all categories were played at the New Dolmen Hotel, Bugibba.

Malta A won a second European title when they beat outgoing champions England 8-4 in the final of the main competition for teams.

The Maltese had qualified to the final after comfortably beating Wales 8-3 in the semi-finals on Thursday night while England prevailed over Ireland with a similar scoreline.

The Malta A team, led by Carmel Cilia, was composed of Antoine Cuschieri, Ivan Rizzo, Clint Azzo-pardi, Stephen Mangion, Clayton Attard and Mario Cutajar.

The men's singles final was contested by England's Jason Twist and Steven Dempsey, of Ireland.

Twist was the outright winner after a clear 7-1 victory.

In the competition for B teams, the Maltese side was eliminated in the semi-finals when they lost to England 8-3.

In the juniors final for singles, England's Steve Petty was crowned champion after beating Lyden Debono 7-1.

The Maltese lad had reached the final after a 6-4 victory over England's Phil Parkin the day before.

Maverick Zammit was eliminated in the juniors' event semi-final following a 6-1 upset to eventual winner Petty.
