British Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon yesterday held talks with Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami during a one-day visit to Malta.
No comments were given to the media though military cooperation between the UK and Malta was believed to be the main topic on the agenda.
Mr Hoon later had a courtesy meeting with Foreign Minister Joe Borg.
The UK's military aid to Malta is small in comparison to that given by Italy and the US. The US recently suspended military aid to the island, along with that given to 49 other countries, because of Malta's support of the International Criminal Court.
Mr Hoon was appointed defence secretary in October 1999, as successor to Lord Robertson who took up the post of Nato secretary general.
He met some of the officers and crews of Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships currently in Malta.
They are HMS Grimsby, HMS Ledbury, HMS Shoreham, HMS Ramsey and RFA Sir Tristram.
