Malta and Estonia discussed trade and political relations today during a visit to Malta by the Estonian Foreign Minister, Urmas Paet.

The Foreign Ministry said the two countries were exploring new ways to enhance trade and business links.

"Maltese and Estonian businessmen could possibly assist each other in projects in the North African and Northern European regions," Foreign Minister Tonio Borg said.

"There is huge potential for such initiatives which would ultimately be beneficial for both countries."

Dr Borg said that a Maltese company which operates an international franchise and 30 restaurants in Malta, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (MacDonalds), is planning to expand its operations and open eight additional restaurants in Malta and the Baltics over the next two years.

Mr Paet thanked the Maltese government for supporting his country's preparations to adopt the euro. He emphasised the importance of establishing better trade relations and congratulated Malta for securing the right to host the European Asylum Support Office.
